What it actually is
A banana leaf meal starts with a mound of rice served directly on a banana leaf, surrounded by a rotating selection of vegetable curries, pickles, papadum and a curry of your choice — commonly chicken, mutton or fish. It's a South Indian tradition brought to Malaysia generations ago, and it remains one of the best-value, most filling meals in the city.
How it works
- Vegetable sides are often refilled for free on request — don't hesitate to ask
- Rice refills are also usually free or very cheap; pace yourself, portions are generous
- Eating with your right hand is traditional and completely normal — cutlery is offered too if you'd rather use it
- When finished, folding the banana leaf toward you is a small traditional gesture of thanks; folding it away signals dissatisfaction — a nice detail, not a strict rule for visitors
Where to find it
Brickfields, KL's Little India, has the highest concentration of well-regarded banana leaf restaurants, several with decades of history. It's also common well beyond Brickfields — most neighbourhoods have at least one solid option.
Most banana leaf restaurants default to vegetarian sides with a meat curry added on top — it's an easy, reliable option for vegetarian travellers even at a meat-serving restaurant.
